Adam Bede by George Eliot

This was a challenging read for me, but I'm glad I stuck with it. I read [b:Middlemarch|19089|Middlemarch|George Eliot|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1568307771l/19089._SY75_.jpg|1461747] not too long ago, which is what put George Eliot on my radar. However, even though the book is about Adam Bede, who I enjoyed getting to know, Hetty plays a large part in it and she was kind of a train wreck. Her immaturity, selfishness, and shallowness lead to her downfall, which is the primary storyline in this book. Captain Donnithorne, who played a primary part in her downfall, was also pretty aggravating; he was that arrogant, well-to-do jerk who believes he is a good person, no matter what he does. His method of taking responsibility for his actions is to buy his way out of trouble. Adam, Dinah, and Seth were more interesting and infinitely more likable, although they each had growing of their own to do. I also found the Poysers to be interesting supporting characters and I found myself laughing at some of the things they would say. Overall, I'd say that this book was kind of a slog for me to get through, but I enjoyed getting to know some of the characters and it definitely had its moments. I also liked the way it ended, and the writing was also very good. I would be open to reading more books by the author, although I'm not sure which one I should tackle next. I read this as a buddy read, and I'm glad my friends encouraged me to read it.
