Peyton Place
by Grace Metalious
Terrible.
I read this to see what the 1950s fuss was all about, and while the events in the book are indeed 'scandalous,' maybe both then and now, the writing was very, very bad.
The characters are flawed—sure—but flaws by themselves do not make characters well-rounded. The character development was severely lacking. It felt like Metalious wrote these characters as she imagined scandalous small-town characters to be, act, and think. As a result, they did not have much substance, and they were one-dimensional.
Sorely disappointed.
