What a breath of fresh air with Ali Hazelwood books. After really enjoying The Love Hypothesis, it seemed like there was a formula that Hazelwood was following with her STEMinist novels and novellas that started to get a bit old. This departure into vampire/werewolf fantasy was a nice change of pace, and it felt like it suited some of the more action-oriented direction that Hazelwood seemed inclined to that just didn’t quite fit with a real-world setting. At first I was somewhat thrown by the comical and whimsical tone in Misery’s perspective, given how serious the blurb seemed to be and how often books like this tend to be. But it ended up being a really enjoyable part of this book. I also really enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers aspect of the book and the unique aspects of vampire and werewolf lore that Hazelwood included. It ended up being a book that I really wanted to keep diving back into to see what happened next, while simultaneously dreading going further because it meant I’d come to the end and be finished with it sooner. My only dislike was the miscommunication between the MCs, but I could at least understand this instance of it more than in other books.
