The Gilded Wolves
by Roshani Chokshi
I am such a huge fan of this book. It was so much fun to read. Yes-- I admit, it was a sliiiight rip off of [b:Six of Crows|23437156|Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)|Leigh Bardugo|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1459349344s/23437156.jpg|42077459], but this was so much richer in terms of the setting and historical elements. Oceans Eleven meets The Librarians meets Indiana Jones, with historical commentary and a dash of fantasy to liven things up (as if I wasn't already screaming). Where else are you going to read a book about a treasure hunt with characters having open discussions about colonialism, imperialism, and the white-washing of history and historical artifacts?
One weakness is that at times it can be dense and convoluted, but again, what can you expect from a book based in 1899 Paris and packed full of Biblical, Egyptian, Greek, Chinese, and Indian mythology as well as mathematics (ew)? Four stars for the scheming and betrayal!!
