Elena Knows by Claudia Piñeiro
5.0
This book is very short, only 173 pages, but definitely not an easy read. At first, I thought it was a thriller or murder mystery, but it’s more than that. Elena Knows talks about a lot of things, and what I liked most was the part about being a woman—how religion and even society view a woman's body as not her own. How Rita has to suffer because her mother abused her body, like checking if Rita had a uterus and could fulfill her responsibilities as a woman. It's crazy, but not so crazy for our society, right? RIGHT.
Then there’s Isabel, whose body was also abused by three people at once: her husband, Rita, and even Elena. she becomes desperate because she doesn't have a good relationship with her child, unlike the typical mother-child bond.
Elena, as a sickly mother, turns out to be not so great either, often thinking she knows her daughter Rita's situation, but in reality, she knows nothing and is sometimes harsh without realizing it. In conclusion, this book isn’t a thriller, mystery, or murder story at all, but more about showing how limited humans are—thinking they know, when in fact, they don’t know much at all.
