Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

3.0

It took me a couple of hours to finish Norse Mythology. Since my childhood I've been very interested in myths and legends. In elementary school I devoured the Valhalla comic book series and I was glad to find out many of those stories were also told in Gaiman's Norse Mythology. I'm a big Gaiman fan and although this must have been a very important passion project to him, I still feel he could've done much better. On the one hand I appreciated the fact he told the stories without changing them, in a way that I felt like I was listening to a village teller relate these ancient myths. On the other hand I was hoping Gaiman would've utilised his own fantastic imagination and included more dialogue. Many old stories like these tend to be vague, contradicting and at times very absurd and ludicrous. I'm sure someone as talented as Gaiman would've been able to elevate some of these confusing parts of the stories. I would recommend Norse Mythology to readers who are familiar with or interested in the subject.
