Hillbilly Elegy changed my perspective in 261 short pages. The author takes you along as he makes his way from child-in-distress to wildly successful adult, and is relatable every step of the way. He approaches the disastrous problems of his childhood with a scientific thoroughness without sacrificing the familial affection that drips from every page. I truly felt as if I'd read a heartwarming novel that, while not preachy, gives every chance for hope of a better path for those "hillbillies" that come after Vance.
