Grey Dog
by Elliott Gish
Grey Dog by Elliott Gish is a slow burn horror that takes place in 1901, and follows 29 year old Ada Byrd. To escape her grief and shame filled past, she accepts a teaching post in an isolated town. She makes friends and explores the woods with her students, but soon begins to experience unnerving and gruesome phenomena. Confused as to what is real and what is delusion, she begins to believe a spirit of the woods she refers to as grey dog is behind these offerings.
Ada’s story is conveyed through short but detailed diary entries containing beautiful prose. She recounts childhood trauma, deals with grief over her sister's passing, and shame from past mistakes. The nature based horror elements in this story were so disturbing but so enjoyable at the same time. It was hard to put down as I was so curious as to where we were being led and what was to happen next. This was Elliott Gish’s debut novel and I will definitely be picking up anything else she puts out!
