The Truth by Terry Pratchett

5.0

The best entry to the series for a few volumes, and for once, there are no extra-dimensional shenanigans going on, just a plain thriller/ mystery. Sir Terry brings what I can only assume are some of his own experiences as a journalist to the fore as he writes the story of the first newspaper on the Discworld. And it is brilliant. I especially like the way we meet some regular characters (namely, Vimes and the Watch) and see them the way they appear to other people. Vimes is his usual self but his interactions with William de Worde, the hero of this story, are a little sinister, especially as Vimes espouses some views that really aren't any different to what he has said before but are, instead, filtered through another character's perspective. It great to meet a new character and have them experience things we know as an outsider. Looking at the upcoming books in this reread, I can see a lot of this sort of thing coming up, and I think it's a great way for a writer to keep a series fresh and interesting for themselves as well as the reader.

Anyway, to get back on track, this is hilarious and exciting and, well, -ing brilliant.
