The Dragon Keeper
by Robin Hobb
Goddamn I love Robin Hobb. She's one of the few authors that nails the 4 categories: world building, characters, writing, and plot. Her characters motivations are incredibly clear and intermingle perfectly with the plot and the world; the characters are also distinct and fascinating. The world is built up over several trilogies, and every book brings new life and depth to the world. I love that many of the characters have barriers they must overcome. One of my very few criticisms is that her antagonists aren't as deep. Their motivations are clear, but they kind of emanate evil, and I tend to like a villain you can sympathize with a little. But that's only a very slight criticism.
I can't put these books down! I pick up each new saga hesitantly, as I know there can only be one first read. But I'll be coming back to these books all my life.
