In Praise of Shadows by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki
informative
medium-paced

I've never read anything like this before, but I was completely enchanted by it.
This is the translation of an essay that was written in 1933. In it, the author is commenting, mainly, on architecture and how the older Japanese generations view light and shadows.
The essay then expands on those ideas and how they may have influenced the development of their society and culture. The author grumbled at the loss of some of the old beauty of having rooms and buildings with shadows, but also admitted that it was necessary and inevitable. He seemed witty and a little sarcastic and I thoroughly enjoyed the work.
It was a little rambling at times but was so beautifully written.
