The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson

Istyria book blog ~ B's world of enchanted books

4.5 stars

Holy smokes. I should have read a Brandon Sanderson book waaaaay sooner, I can tell you that. Well I'll be reading more of them in the future, you can count on it. The Rithmatist was awesome! Thank you to my dear friend Ben, who recommended this wonderful book to me!

The Rithmatist is about Joel, the son of a lowly chalkmaker. He's always dreamed of becoming a Rithmatist, someone with the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures knows as chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity's only defense against the Wild Chalklings that have nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask. When students start disappearing at Joel's school, the prestigious Armedius Academy, he is assigned as the assistant of the professor investigating the crimes. Soon he will find himself on a path that could change Rithmatics and their world forever.

Okay, I don't really have very much to say about this book. The writing was great as I expected after all the praise this author has been getting from everyone I know. I loved the characters and their chemistry and I really rooted for Joel! I felt bad for him at first for how they were treating him and he grows a lot in this book. As do all the other characters too and I like that. There isn't really a romance yet, but I do think that may happen in the future.

The one thing that bugged me was the world building. I wanted more. I never really knew where this was taking place. Is it the normal Earth we know, albeit a slightly altered version? And when is this exactly? Unless I missed something while reading, it was never really clear to me. I did love the pieces of history of the Rithmatics through the books Joel is reading and the drawings throughout the novel. To me it was really, really fascinating.

Overall, I can easily recommend this book to everyone I know. It's a great book and it even gave me a couple of Harry Potter vibes at times, which is always a good thing. So if you haven't already, please read it!
