I wanted something light while doing some heavier reading. I really hoped to like this book because it was free during a stuff your kindle day. But it really wasn’t good. It reads like a Fourth Wing/Divergent fanfic, which is pretty bad considering Fourth Wing is already an ACOTAR/Divergent fanfic. I understand this is most likely independently published, but at times I felt this had been barely edited, if at all. The characters are flat and uninteresting copies of a million-times-done stereotypes. This book is a novella that I read in two hours and yet the smallness and frailty of the MC is mentioned multiple times. Her actions make no sense. Also the most powerful man to walk the earth leaves his political engagement of convenience for a woman he met three days ago. ?????
The writing in general is really clunky, a lot of repetitive descriptions and boring dialogue. The funny side character was literally the only tolerable one in the whole story for me. The dragons were cute. I just wish this whole thing had been expanded on a bit more. Polished. Proofread.
I really miss it when people cultivated their writing skills first via things like fanfics in places like wattpad or AO3 before jumping into publishing, especially if their writing is so obviously inspired by a different and viral literary piece. The market is super saturated with cheap copies of the same things as people try to chase that high but this really is not the answer, at least not for me.
