Shōgun: The Epic Novel of Japan
by James Clavell, James Clavell
What an insanely long book. It's a testament to how good it is that I managed to actually finish the thing with my terrible attention span. Clavell manages to make Sengoku Japan feel mystical and down to earth at all once - Shogun has the quality world building of a well done fantasy novel, with razor sharp accuracy and strong characters. You can tell just from reading that the story and setting was meticulously researched, yet Clavell's intimate knowledge of this era of Japanese culture doesn't seem overbearing, romantic or critical. It just kind of is. Shogun presents an engaging dive into another culture and world but still maintains that, despite differences in language and customs, people are still just people. This may be one of the best books I've ever read.
