The Spirit Bares Its Teeth
by Andrew Joseph White
The Spirit Bares Its Teeth is a violent violet colored trip of a horror book and I loved every second of it.
The book itself reads like a gothic mystery/romance almost having the same vibe as movies like Crimson Peak, a prevailing sense of dread and that something isn't quite right as Silas tries to unravel the mystery of their new surroundings. The setting and characters are all so interesting and well thought out, with complex morals, motivations, and decisions that I was wanting more time with each of them, good and bad because they felt so real.
Andrew Joseph White once again captures a sense of queer rage and vengeance that feels so honest, primal, and is one of the most satisfying things to read. Though this is technically YA fiction, I truly think the story, writing, characters, themes, and graphic nature are all exemplary of any horror novel I've read, YA or otherwise. Some parts became difficult to read, but are done in such experts ways you can't put the book down.
Overall another stellar book and one I would highly recommend to anyone who has the stomach for it.
