Untouchable

When I first picked up this book I definitely wasn’t expecting it to be like this. I saw that it was a bully romance and expected it to be of a similar vein as Fear Me by B.B. Reid (which I liked).
However, this one is quite different and not as angsty as I was expecting for a bully romance (if you can call this a bully romance). I’m hesitant to even call this a bully romance because the bully portion of the book is quite short at the beginning. Carter doesn’t spend years or even months bullying Zoey. But I will say that their first “interaction” is going to piss off and turn off A LOT of people. Because he basically forces her to give him a blowjob….
Now, if you have any triggers about rape then definitely stay away. But if you stick with the book and you’re the type of person who can forgive a character for basically any indiscretion, then you’re in for a real treat with this book. It’s fun, funny, sexy, sweet, romantic, and basically all the things you’d want in a romance.
Zoey is a very strong heroine. She has what I would consider the perfect personality for a heroine. She’s not annoying and she has a good balance between being strong and knowing her own limits. She doesn’t really care what other people think about her and that makes her an incredibly interesting and attractive person. It’s what draws Carter to her and opens the door for an amazing relationship between the two. And can I just say that I love that she isn’t against accepting gifts and financial help from Carter. She’s not a gold digger, but I love that she wasn’t too proud to allow him to show his love in this way.
Carter (despite his initial indiscretions) has a lot of layers and hiding he’s doing from the world. Zoey manages to peel back these layers and underneath we find a man who has darkness inside, but he also loves passionately and with his entire being. He’s very intelligent and knows how to use the resources he has (looks, popularity, money) to get what he wants. But when he loves someone, he is generous and extends those benefits to the one he loves. He can be a total asshole to those who piss him off, but call me crazy, I actually liked this about him. He’s also probably a bonafide sociopath (or at the very least a narcissist), but he’s OUR narcissistic sociopath. Lol
Together, Zoey and Carter are on fire. Their banter is heartwarming and fun. Their relationship is deep and layered. And their sex is hot and steamy. The relationship building was phenomenally done and I really felt them growing as friends, then lovers, and then as gf/bf. Loved seeing the growth! It was so fun and sweet.
There are lots of things to love about this book. It turned out to be a favorite with some new favorite characters for me. But it’s not for everyone. Beyond the initial sexual assault, the hero does some other controlling things (which you either like or don’t), they get into some other mild rape play fantasies which I know isn’t for everyone. I liked it personally, but I know not everyone is into that.
Overall I loved the book. Such a great story. Most of it is actually quite light and fun with tons of hilarious witty banter between the two (loved this). But there are some darker threads that could be triggers for some people. Proceed with caution, but if those aren’t an issue for you then you might just love this book.
