Jamaica Inn
by Daphne du Maurier
I was told to expect a brooding Gothic atmosphere and that's exactly what I got, with the central mystery a nice rolling boil underpinning the narrative.
Unfortunately, I saw the fairly recent BBC adaptation which meant that I was spoiled for the Big Twist and this coupled with my lack of investment in the main romance made it a book I liked rather than loved.
