Scorched Grace by Margot Douaihy
1.75
mysterious medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Loveable characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

I didn’t like the main character, especially being stuck in her head with her winding monologue that resulted annoying most of the time.  Despite wanting to be a helpful member of her community she can be quite awful, selling out and beating up people. The only interesting element I found myself looking forward to was Sister Holiday’s past and the snapshot scenes we were offered a glimpse of.
However, whilst the main character, Sister Holiday, is offered depth, all other characters feel one dimensional. Especially Sister Honor.
Sister Holiday’s detective skills were amateurish at best and entirely useless at worst. The mystery was perhaps the worst part of the novel, on one hand we have Sister Holiday who, with the excuse of investigating, ends up discovering nothing new and only being an obstacle for the case to be solved, on the other hand there is no building tension and no clues to piece together. The author seems to struggle trying to keep the readers’ interest and, honestly, whilst the premise is interesting it may have been more prudent to write this as a short story.
This was all without mentioning the Christianity and the main character’s belief. That annoyed me. Especially the way that Sister Holiday chooses to only pray to women - that’s ridiculous and is another way in which the author tries to ignore the rot and corruption within the Church by pinpointing all the blame towards men. Which is a gross oversimplification of the issue.
Would not recommend.
