The Chalice of the Gods
by Rick Riordan
This is Rick Riordan at his best. From top to bottom, this was like a love letter to the character of Percy Jackson and the people who have been growing up along side them since the very beginning. To write this book now about the fear of aging and how to find beauty in it--that was for us. Rather than dangle the nostalgia bait in front of our willing faces and replay the same stories we've already read, he dares us to look into the future and imagine something bright, that we might just be sitting around with our loved ones just like Percy and Annabeth and Grover will, talking about the true breadth that a single life can hold. He sees it all. We know his tropes, that when it comes to the gods, things are never quite as they seem and he used the character's understanding of that to weave in some new and very refreshing humor. That might be my favorite part--the humor, which Rick has always excelled at has also aged up a bit to meet the aged audience. I found myself laughing at almost every page and then melting into the my heart of hearts as he continued to do justice for the characters we have loved for so many years. Funny, thoughtful and full of the particular spark only Rick Riordan is capable of. I loved this book and I'm so excited to see what comes next.
