While the story was engaging and definitely kept me reading, I wasn't a fan of the writing style and thought that it was a pretty big page count for lack of depth. (I do think that the scope of the story, 12 trials, was ambitious for just one book, so it automatically lent to a weakness in terms of depth.) I hated the short chapters that ended in the middle of a scene just for ~tension~, and that Lyra's internal narrative would suddenly cut off to keep things from the reader for, again, "tension" and mystery. I liked Lyra by the end of it, but it took so long to get a handle on her. And I hated how she and Hades acted like immature teenagers in a first relationship throughout the entire bookâlearn how to communicate! BUT, all that said, the story itself was a good concept, and the last 25% definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. I'll read the second when it releases, but I do hope it's better.
I swear I have positive thoughts about this book too. I did genuinely enjoy it, but my complaints are specific enough to point out whereas my praise is more generic. So it goes. I'll try to think of more praise once it's stewed for a few days.
