His Death Bringer
by Courtney W. Dixon
Dixon does it again!
His Death Bringer is book 1 at the start of what will be an incredible series by the sorceress of dark romance, Courtney W Dixon. From page 1, it's heart-wrenchingly exquisite in its storytelling.
I think the first five chapters especially were the most heartbreaking for me.
Assassin, Dante, was on a job where he had to take out multiple targets but, to his surprise, a young man was hidden away in the house. Intrigued, he kills everyone but this young man, Luca.
Luca, held against his will as a slave for years and years and thoroughly unequipped to face the real world, sees Dante as his angel of death and clings to him.
Unable to let him go, Dante takes Luca in. Along with a guard dog, Cleo, they grow closer together until they start shifting their emotions around. They fall in love, but it takes a while to get there, almost as if it happens by accident.
Dante helps Luca discover what really happened all those years ago, and Luca works hard to fend for himself. The protective side Dante has for Luca makes them both more complete both as individuals and as a couple. It's wonderful to see the transition of Dante's not needing anyone mesh with Luca's being dependent on everyone else for everything. Together, they learn to become more than what they are, supporting each other in ways never thought possible for the most wonderful of outcomes.
Dixon weaves an amazing tale full of twists and turns around a group of morally grey characters whom we meet and will get to know in future books in this series. The emotional roller coaster we readers ride in His Death Bringer really takes a toll. You'll want to relax and do nothing else for an hour or two after you read it. It's so good. So so good.
This book rivals my absolute favorite book of hers, Double Up, from the Ohana Surfing Club series. Zay and Noah broke my heart into a million pieces before healing it by the end of Double Up. His Death Bringer has Dante and Luca melting my heart into a driveling pile of mush before remaking it into something stronger and better than ever. If you only ever read two of Dixon's books, His Death Bringer needs to be one of them. Okay fine. Make it three because you'll need No Man's Land in there, too. :-) Screw it. Just read 'em all. You'll thank me later!
Thanks to the author for an ARC copy of His Death Bringer. I'll never say no to reading one of her books!
