The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst
4.0

The Queen is meant to keep spirits controlled and prevent them from attacking humans. As a result, there are always Queen heirs, women brought up to learn control, waiting for the current queen to die and for them to be chosen.

This is the story of an heir who is just....mediocre. That is the best and most accurate way to describe her-mediocre. But she has determination, and that determination will keep pushing her.

I enjoyed that the book spanned her life from age 5 up through adulthood without being bogged down. She starts as a 5 year old. Next chapter is 5 years later. Next chapter is another 5, then 2, then 3. It was refreshing. I also found it refreshing that yes, there was a mean girl, who didn't act as if you would envision. And the main character. Wow. Totally unexpected personality. She is not a special girl, has no special powers and I LOVED that. This alone gives the book 4 stars! I love when authors are not afraid to have an average character lead the way.
