Grandma Gatewood's Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail by Ben Montgomery

4.0

The first woman who thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail without a tent, sleeping bag, supplies etc. Oh and the first time she did this, she was in her 60s! I loved reading about her! Her struggles & hard life where she finally left an abusive husband, after years of fleeing to their woods on their farm land. When her kids were grown she began walking long stretches of miles. Then she ended up at the AT without telling anyone about it! I love so many of her experiences on the trail & her matter of fact “grandma” way of journaling her experiences. A hiker tells his memory of her to this writer about when he was hiking & came across Grandma Gatewood hiking, on her third AT hike & asked her what her favorite part of the trail was.... She was quoted to say, “That’s downhill, Sonny!”
