Not among the best in the series, but not a bad book either. The plot was one of a kind, particularly in its time, but in my opinion, there were moments in the storytelling where basic procedures or common sense were forgotten in order to keep the story moving forward at the expense of the main characters in this series.
This story largely featured the 87th precinct Detective Arthur Brown, who, at least in this point of this 40+ book series, is the only black detective on the squad, and I just feel that he deserved a better overall opportunity to stand out.
That said, these books were basically published at a rate of one per year for more than four decades, and that is quite a feat. Not all of them are going to be home runs. This one was at least a base hit and that’s all it needed to be.
I’m just a reader, not a writer. Ed McBain accomplished more in this single short novel then I have in a lifetime. I do not lose sight of that fact, even as I assess the story as being, by the standards of McBain’s large body of work, meh.
