One of the best books I've ever read. The fact that it was multi-generational made it so much better because you could see how seemingly small decisions characters made would ripple out and affect their descendants as time passed. The book provided valuable insight into the relationship between Korea and Japan during and after WW2, the struggles Koreans living in Japan faced, and the sacrifices people make for those they love.
I loved how she didn't shy away from showing the characters' flaws, they felt so human because they made mistakes and worked through them like everyone does.

“Living everyday in the presence of those who refuse to acknowledge your humanity takes great courage.”
