I finally gave up on "The Story of a Soul". Therese de Lisieux's craving for hardship, pain, and punishment was just too much for me. I am no longer a Christian (haven't been for quite a while) and the philosophy exhibited by Therese is part of the reason. So I admit, no longer being a Christian, I may just not understand what she was trying to say. I do believe in her love for God, it is just not the way I want to live my life, and I find her values painful.
