Twenty-eight-year-old Colton Lane isn't one to really become involved in the affairs of other people, all the more when they're strangers. But something about twenty-four-year-old Verity Gwynn had him taking notice from the moment his eyes spied her from across the room. She wasn't a drop dead gorgeous scene stealer and having never spoken to her before, it wasn't her witty conversation that he found appealing. He surprises even himself when he engages with her, and when he learns that she's in a desperate search for a job for herself and her older brother, Ryan, with special needs, he comes to her rescue and recommends them to the head of human resources at the dinner theater where he's held the role of Viking Knight for more than four years. He isn't sure, however, how to handle Verity looking at him as if he truly was some sort of knight in shining armor. Whatever armor he may is anything but shiny, tarnished being a far more realistic description for it. But he can't seem to stop himself from constantly saving the day when it comes to Verity. The more time they're in each other's company, the more they become tethered to one another, and while tying themselves to Colt was never part of her plan, there's no denying how she and Ryan wouldn't choose to be anywhere else. Time waits for no one, and neither does it wait for what may be the right time to fall in love, but will Verity still want to be with Colt when all his dark secrets are revealed?
Gah! This book. I mean, seriously! I was reading it and there was no denying that I was enjoying myself immensely during the first few chapters of the book, but then out of the blue, it felt as if I had been lifted up by this quiet wind that was swirling around me this whole time and I found myself in this tale of love, family, fate, absolution, and redemption being shared by two main characters who so need a bit more happiness and sunshine than what they've been getting lately. Yes, Verity loves her brother and he loves her without question, but her life has been about Ryan for so long that you want her to be able to have that someone she can share the rest of her life with, even though it's irrefutable that she would gladly do it all again for him. Then there's Colt, who undeniably loves his cousin and would do anything for her, but the burden of responsibility he's put on himself has cost him in more ways than one, and my heart squeezes for him because it's clear he wouldn't have it any other way. They may appear to be an odd couple, but Colt and Verity were absolutely perfect for each other. That doesn't mean, of course, that it was all smooth sailing for them, and it's through all those rough patches that they realize that they are strong together and that sometimes, one has to be stronger for the both of them. I should never have doubted Katy Regnery and the hold a modern fairytale has over me. Five-plus stars for Dark Sexy Knight. ♥
