Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence

I gotta say, I’m shocked this was written by a man. The focus on female sexuality and pleasure is very well done and insightful. For those of you who don’t know, this book was wildly controversial for decades. The author had to privately publish in Italy, and much later in the 60s, there was a trial under the Obscene Publications Act in Britain against Penguin Publishing (who had picked it up long after the author’s death from TB). Penguin won the lawsuit and was able to continue publishing. By today’s standards, this text is very mild. For the time it was published, this was crazy smutty. It’s about a high class woman whose husband is injured in the war and is now unable to have sex with her due to his lingering injuries. He encourages her to find someone to impregnate her so they may raise a son who will takeover the family estate one day. She ends up having a torrid affair with a low class gamekeeper on their sprawling estate. This isn’t quite what her husband had in mind. He just wanted her to get pregnant, not fall in love. I enjoyed this one. Glad I picked it up.
