Re-read after having read it for the first time in 2018. For about the first third it felt slow and I wondered if I wasn't going to enjoy it as much the second time, but then I got into it. First time I read it I was totally entranced with the world-building of Vere; this time I was way more focused on what later context has revealed about Laurent's actions in this book. Damen's level of obliviousness is a masterpiece. Very excited to continue my re-read.
This one isn't for the faint of heart or easily upset - Pacat has created a world with lots of problems, and a relationship that is not going to feel safe or easy, but if you can get into it the character work is absolutely masterful.
