Edit: ok I’m back with kinder thoughts like I suspected I would be. But I’m still not a Liz fan. I cannot tell if Chloe intended for it to be this way, or if readers are simply coming to this conclusion but I feel this book attempts to romanticize mental illness which I think it wrong. Liz’s actions are driven by horrifying trauma combined with mental illness, but that does not give her a free pass to do whatever she wants. There are still consequences to your actions, even if the actions are caused by trauma and/or mental illness. However upon reflection, I do think this book shows the complexities of living with mental illness better than I thought in my initial review.
I was really loving this series and this book was a huge letdown. I feel awful that I hate it because I saw Chloe’s video about how this book was her story but this book has made me so angry. After reading this book, I understand Lizzie significantly better and I continue to dislike her. Tragically she was victimized time and again, but she also made Hugh her victim too. She assaults him time and again to try to get him to come back to her and then has the audacity to come back from treatment and say she wants him to move on and be happy????? How magnanimous of you to finally grant your permission when he was trying to do that all along but you kept sexually assaulting him!!!! I saw people saying how mad they were that Hugh was moving on with Katie while Liz was working to get better for him like what??????? She hurt him repeatedly (even though her mania caused her to do it, she still caused pain), why would she be owed him back like some sort of prize for doing what she should have done all along?? This book was 200 pages too long and was an insufferable read. Hugh was the only person I could stand in this entire book. Everyone else was excruciating. Caoimhe was such an awful sister. Obviously Mark is the scum of the earth. The dad is a punk bitch. Maybe I’ll process this more and come back with kinder thoughts but for now I’m enraged.
