Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
5.0
I made a huge mistake when I first received this book a year ago. A very dear friend gave it to me as a gift because she had heard (she personally does not like to read) that it was a fascinating story. I did not have the heart to tell her that I had seen some of my students reading it and was not interested. I made the unforgivable mistake of judging the book by its cover. I assumed that it would be a teeny-bopper novel about an outcast girl who didn't fit in with the popular crowd and learned to like herself, blah, blah, blah...
So it sat on my shelf until recently when I thought, "What the hey. I'll give it a whirl." Was I ever wrong about this story! It is actually young adult science fiction. It focuses on a future distopia where you are considered an "ugly" until you turn 16 and have an operation to make you perfect. As simple as that sounds, there is so much more to the story. The writing is fun and because I'm a romantic and a sucker for girly stuff, I enjoyed the love story between the protagonist and the last person she thought she would love.
Of course it has a cliff hanger ending, so I have asked for the rest of the series for Christmas. I just hope I can wait the few days before starting the next part of the story.
