The Wright Brothers by David McCullough

4.0

Fascinating as always McCullough introduces us to the Wrights, a family of humble, can-do, self-made Americans. There was a real element of danger to their pursuit of flight. They weren't obsessed but dedicated. Our government as usual was asleep at the wheel. Not until Wilbur went to France and was flying over that country did the USA wake up. Orville survived an accident at Fort Myer that killed the Army's first aviator-Selfridge. We get to meet their father as well as a very strong willed sister, Katherine. All I knew about my namesakes was that they were bicycle mechanics from Ohio who tinkered with the idea of flight. They were keen observers, tireless workers, and unchanged by fame and fortune. Their adventures in France are fun to read.
