Allied by Amy Tintera

3.0

The end of a trilogy! Whoohoo! The third book was more or less what I expected. As I've said in the very first book, the Ruined is nothing special. It's made up of recycled tropes and ideas that have been used in YA fantasy over and over again. However, I still enjoyed following the characters and watching the author improve her writing skills. Looking back, I can see a definate improvement in the characters and worldbuilding.

In Allied, Em has decided that she can no longer stand by and condone Olivia's violence. She decides to partner up with Cas and the Lera army against her sister. On the other hand, Cas is struggling to keep his grip on his country and unwilling to kill his traitorous cousin, Jovita. The two main characters have grown so much, and I'm honestly proud of how far they've come. The final book continues with the POVs of Em, Cas, Olivia and Aren, but adds the new POV of Galo, Cas' guard and Iria. Now, I'm ok with a few POVs, but having more than three makes it hard to connect with each character. I often found myself skipping over Galo's parts because I wanted to see the actual action happen. Aren is still reeling after Iria's abduction to Oslo, and is determined to save her. Our favorite villian, Olivia, has decided she's going to conquer every town she can, and kill all the humans. She's really going off the rocker. The events of the previous book provide a interesting start for Allied.
