Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love
by Jonathan Van Ness
This wasn't a particularly well-written book. JVN's endless gymnastics and figure skating analogies got a little tired. And the pacing was weird - the first chunk was overly detailed, while it felt like it got more and more rushed as it went on. I didn't get a sense for how he achieved his transformation to a healthier outlook, but it was obvious that he did. All that said, I still love the book. I happened to read it just when I needed it, and JVN's wisdom is hard-won and all the more valuable and genuine for that. He has gone through far more than I would have imagined from his on-screen persona and put himself through even more than that. It was eye-opening to see that side of someone, to see how they got to the life outlook they have now.
