I am ambivalent about this book; it really feels like it could be an installment of Stephen King's "Gunslinger" series, which I have read twice. Similar to King, the premise and atmosphere start out great and spooky. Also similar to King there are some plot contrivances and coincidences necessary to bring the story to a close given the sprawling (and creative!) world-building. All in all, I think the comparisons to King are apt, but King books have this magic "x" factor (is it the writing? the characters?) that always leaves me coming back for more despite their flaws - I didn't feel that here.
