Lessons in Chemistry

I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and why so many people liked it so much, but from what I read I don’t understand. It seems very unrealistic, the MC seems to have the mindset of a woman from 2023 but is in the 1950s. It’s possible to be a forward-thinking working woman in that time period, but the character just seems so unrealistic. There seems to be no nuance, everything is black and white, all or nothing. Life just isn’t that way, and you can shed a light on misogyny and oppression but with a realistic and nuanced view. I thought maybe the character gets better or develops throughout the book, but with how the book was going I didn’t really care to find out. Also, with how the book was marketed I thought the book was going to be more light-hearted, but very early in the book there is a detailed description of sexual assault and a suicide.
