A decent story but was a bit surprised it won the Newbery Medal. It is a bit raw in my opinion for young readers, bordering on crude. Simplistic, rather predictable story as well. Has a good moral as far as persevering and not giving up, but not up to the "children's classic" standard I would expect given its Newbery recognition.
