Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America by Rick Perlstein

5.0

Honestly one of the most fascinating books I’ve ever read. Perlstein is fantastic at weaving a coherent narrative with seemingly inconsequential facts. Talking about the movies that came out, or what some random Readers Digest article said, and tying that into macro-policy on Vietnam. It really puts some of the book’s larger themes about what “real” Americans were thinking (a Herculean task under the best of circumstances) at the time into a larger context.

Nixonland is not for the feint of heart though - really put my library’s generous overdue policy to the test here. There’s just such a density of information that it can almost feel overwhelming at times. I learned so much though and am really looking forward to reading the next few volumes in Perlstein’s series on this era (after a break to catch my breath)
