Coraline by Neil Gaiman

5.0

A wonderful and very frightening book, about a girl who finds a doorway to a different but similar world, complete with an Other Mother and Other Father, only to discover that under what is familiar is something ancient and evil. What is most remarkable about the book is the character Coraline herself, and how she deals with the situation she finds herself in, with incredible bravery despite her fears.

The novel has so much humor and scares. My favorite lines that had me laughing out loud were:

"'Now Coraline,' said Miss Spink. 'what's your name?'"

"'Coraline,' said Coraline."

Most astonishing was the unexpectedness of the final chapter and how Coraline must draw on all of her intelligence, bravery, and persistence to see through an ingenious plan of her own devising.

The novel is especially potent after reading the bizarre and terrifying 1882 short story "The New Mother" by Lucy Clifford (http://weirdfictionreview.com/2011/11/creepy-classic-lucy-cliffords-the-new-mother/).
