When You Look Like Us by Pamela N. Harris

4.0

Jay is used to covering for his sister Nicole, but he swears this is the last time. That was on Thursday. It's now Sunday, and he hasn't heard from her. What happened to Nic?

Harris's book covers the sad truth about how little attention missing black and brown children get, and how if they do get any attention, it plays into the stereotypes that exist, especially if they come from a poorer neighborhood. I enjoyed being in Jay's head, even if he does seem a little impulsive or to bounce around like a ping-pong ball (my husband would laugh if he heard me say this). There's a lot to like here.
