War of the Spark: Ravnica by Greg Weisman

4.0

Overall I found War of the Spark to be an entertaining read. I've seen a lot of comments that rakes this book over the coals for the simplistic language and writing, but it really didn't bother me. For younger readers looking to get into the lore of MTG I think this isn't a bad starting spot. The novel does start in the middle of the action which would probably throw some readers off, but it provides enough context to situate newcomers as it progressed. The shifting perspectives of the book is both a boon and a bane to the text. One hand it was interesting seeing the action in Ravnica through multiple viewpoints, but I know that some would have prefered having a core characters as the protagonist. While WoS isn't the most groundbreaking of lore texts, it was a simple read that kept me entertained. If you are critical of the games lore, you may find this book to be a letdown, but if you want a fun and simple read with some of your favorite characters from the MTG lore I'd recommend WoS.
