I really wanted to like this book, the premise seemed so fun, but it just fell flat. There were a few things I liked but it wasn’t enough to save the story for me. I liked that Luke and Emmett had their own individual plots and motivations, as those plotlines were more interesting to me than the actual relationship. I liked the concept of the story but I don’t think it was executed that well. The writing just wasn’t to my taste, there were a lot of moments where I thought it could be more descriptive and show what was happening instead of telling. I also was so frustrated with Luke and Emmett’s relationship because it just seemed like they weren’t compatible for most of the story. By the end they were on the same page but the rest of the story they were in different phases of their identity acceptance. Emmett was proudly out and wanted to make his mark as a gay country star while Luke was running around wrecking his relationships and making himself upset because he wasn’t able to be out and decided to hide it. Which staying closeted is completely valid and I get why he wanted to be discreet but I feel like it wasn’t fair to Emmett to have to hide everything and walk on egg shells around Luke because he was afraid of upsetting him. I also wasn’t a fan of how fast the relationship moved. I get they’re teenagers and it’s a summer fling but the way Emmett was convinced Luke was the love of his life in like a month like where’s the tension and the build up 😭 I guess the relationship just wasn’t to my personal taste. I thought the plot about Luke’s grandma and Wanda Jean was the most interesting part of the book and the only reason I kept reading. I really wished I liked this but it just didn’t do it for me.
