Out of her historical fiction books, this may have the most happy moments. However, the grief and loss is maybe the heaviest. Not her saddest book, but sad and heartbreaking none the less. More importantly, it was informative and insightful and moving.
I finished The Great Alone two books back, which dealt with Vietnam veterans among other things. The last book I read. The Emperor of Gladness, focused on a Vietnamese-American youth in the 2000s, and has mentions of how the war affected his family. I am so grateful to the literary world for offering perspectives like this. It is a war I learned about in only the most factual terms.
I need more Kristin Hannah historical fiction, but I also need a break from heartbreak.
