Fence: Striking Distance by Sarah Rees Brennan
1.0

If you’re reading this right after reading the comics, it can seem like an unneeded recap- especially because most of the things that are recapped aren’t really forgettable moments, unless you’ve never read the comics.

The biggest problem I had with this book was the characters. They were out-of-character, to an extent that I found myself unconsciously rolling my eyes.

Probably around the half-way point is where the characters probably got high on paint fumes. Everyone, every single character, acted insane like they were on something, and those that didn’t act so dramatic didn’t notice that their schoolmates were doing some day-drinking.

Like, the damn watch store? First off, Seiji would not do that for Nicholas, at least it seems very OOC for him to do so considering their relationship. They just acted high and it seemed like the author didn’t know what else to write to make the book longer and wanted to put in something to get something other than an eye role out of the reader.

The coincidences were lined up like a damn speed dating event. Like how in gods name did Jesse find Seiji by the woods. Like my man, no limousine drives on roads that run along a forest.

There was no fencing in this book, other than some practising that isn’t really mentioned.

In the end, I think this is a poorly written crack fanfic. The only thing resembling the main source is the names and the place they stay at. It doesn’t seem like anything in this book is considered cannon, and clearly nothing is taken seriously for it to be cannon.

I’d probably recommend this to anyone that considers the fence comics their favourite thing in existence. Because there’s really no plot to Striking Distance, and the way the characters act gets real old real quick.
