The Summer Book by Tove Jansson
4.25
lighthearted reflective

Written in 1972 by Swedish author, this quiet novella reads like a series of connected short stories.
The setting is small island on the gulf of Finland. Most of the interactions are between a six-year-old girl, Sophia, & her grandmother.
Each chapter consists of small moments/vignettes that feel like meditations on the fleeting summer & life seasons as well
Themes: childhood innocence & adventure, aging
A quick read that appears lighthearted & simple, but subtly hints at deeper, universal truths & the process of uncovering/exploring magic while trying to understand our place.
