If I Disappear
by Eliza Jane Brazier
Book TWs include: excessive animal cruelty/death on page, boring unreliable characters, “all women are insane/bad/whiny/awful” tropes
There were some standout quotes and bits of writing on this book, but overall it was just kind of frustrating and boring. The atmosphere was suitably creepy and shudder-inducing at times but the MC, Sera, was mostly irritating, erratic, and tried too hard to prove a point unknown even to her. This book is very on the nose with the idea of what the “crazy woman” title actually means versus what society thinks it is versus what men think it is versus what other women think it is and on and on.
I finished it because I don’t want to DNF it and kept waiting for it to get good, and while it picked up a bit towards the end, the plot was consistently all over the place, difficult to follow, and the ending was a subpar letdown to a subpar thriller. I also didn’t appreciate this book trying to guise itself as “good for her” madness, when it was just general mayhem.
I wanted it to be better considering the summary and it was just generally kind of meh. The only redeeming factor for me compared to other reviewers is that I wasn’t troubled by the second person POV. In the context of the story, I think it actually worked, despite the fact that the story itself just doesn’t.
