I don't have words for how beautiful this novel was. I was absolutely blown away. It is now one of my favorite books of all time, and with good reason. Bovalino crafts a beautiful, atmospheric world. I could taste the sea salt, feel the mud squelching beneath my boots, smell the smoke in the air... Every part of the setting of this world is haunting and it creates the perfect background to share the story of Grey and Kier.
As for Grey and Kier themselves, they have become my favorite romance story. The devotion and yearning is so thick I could cut it with a knife. I have never before found a novel that makes me relate to the relationship between my husband and I. To see it put down on the page was a light in my soul. The characters are all mature and fully-developed. They make rational, logical decisions. They make mistakes and learn from them. There is a full cast of supporting characters who come to life as you read. The dialogue is so good that I literally fell to my knees after reading certain parts.
The pacing was insanely good. The first half of the book proceeded nicely, but the second half had me enthralled. I could not put this book down. There was so much tension that I stayed up far past my bedtime to finish the story. The ending was beautiful. I cried so much during this book (not just during the end) that I could have caused a flash flood.
My ONLY complaint with this book (other than it being over) is that it leaned a little bit on a miscommunication trope, which is my least favorite and most despised trope.
Overall, I cannot recommend this book enough. It made me want to throw myself off a cliff while reading it. I suffered, and I suffered, and yet... It was worth every second. I would rate it 6 stars if I could.
