This book made me viscerally anxious. My first read was that it concerned motherhood, with the boy taking all from his mother without a care, and the mother still claiming to be happy despite not being so. The internet added another read, of human relationships with, and exploitation of, the environment. I hoped this was an intentionally moral story, then discovered the author worked for Playboy and claimed the story “had no message.” Does he just think this is what a man is entitled to from a woman?
