Loved this book. Compared to Mistborn, the stakes are raised and the sense of tension is far higher, especially from around the halfway point onward. It’s also a significantly darker book than the first one. For many of the same reasons, the characters take on more nuance, as they grapple with some extreme and dire scenarios.
The warmth of the developing relationships between the core crew is once again a key part of the story. While the dialogue can get a little silly sometimes, it’s earnest enough that it didn’t detract from how enjoyable these interactions are. In general, I really appreciate the depth written into most of the main cast of characters - even as some of the side characters feel a bit tropey and uncomplicated. Well, it’s a fantasy story, what did you expect?
The world building is as fun and detailed as in the last one, and it’s development does not impede plot development in the slightest.
