On the Mountain by Riley Hart
3.0
This book was not for me, and that’s okay…
I couldn’t stand either character and I really tried to.
I honestly liked Crow more than Cyrus. That says a lot since Crow growled… a lot, and I’ll be honest I hate that.
Overall, the book had potentially. The characters were just bad.
Now here’s my long review:
*I am aware Cyrus suffers from mental illness*
One thing I disliked was how insecure Cyrus was with his everyday actions. When Crow simply looked at him concerningly as he brought up his medications his immediate reaction was that he judged him.
I get it, it’s easy to be conscious when all you hear is harsh comments. However he never takes into account that Crow lives on a mountain… ever!!
Again, I get it, it’s easy to feel attacked when you’re used to the judgement of others. However, he always tends to forget that Crow didn’t grow up like he did when these moments arise. He grew up to despise the help of others especially doctors, you know this yet this is your reaction!? I don’t get it… at all.
Another thing I didn’t like was his “I wanna go home”, moments. Okay, then go! He’s not holding you hostage, YOU want to stay but constantly whine when things get uncomfortable. You also want to wear his clothes but hate when he wants you to eat. Then you get sad when you think he’s making you leave because you want to stay, like make up your mind Cyrus!! Gosh. You said you act like a bratty child, you really do.
“I ripped my jacket from his hands, angry at him even though I didn’t have a right to be. I tugged it on like a bratty child. If I leave my bag here, I will have to come back. He’ll have to bring it to me.”
Cyrus then proceeds to lash out at him because he fails yet again to recognize that he’s on an unknown mountain. A mountain he already got hurt on.
Crow has the patience of a saint because I could never!!
So what does Cyrus do after he’s upset, apologizes per usual. I understand he has trauma and his own issues, it can be hard to overcome. However, he is all over the place… yet says he’s okay and he doesn’t need his meds.
“I’m sorry, Crow. I know you’re not used to this…and you told me you’re trying. I have a lot of issues. Relationships with people are hard for me to navigate. I can get a bit up and down, take things too personally, but I shouldn’t put my struggles on you.”
The next thing was how Cyrus was always pushing at Crow. As I showed above, his apology. He was upset Crow wouldn’t let him help weatherproof windows (which he did end up helping with anyways). It’s funny because Cyrus mentions in his inner monologue how he knows how hard it is for Crow to have someone in his space. He gets that Crow is used to doing things and being by himself yet he constantly tries to intervene into Crows life.
“Neither of us mentioned Cyrus leaving. I couldn’t figure out why he didn’t want to,” also Cyrus after any inconvenience: I WANNA GO HOME but not really, I just wanna be dramatic
Here’s another scene I hated:
“I was going to eat. I was just going to do it over here. I only said no because you don’t get to do that. You don’t get to throw me away and then try to take care of me. You can’t pretend you care if I eat, then want to send me away.”
“I’m sorry,” he said, looking down at his food. “This is your home. Of course I can’t stay. I shouldn’t have gotten mad at you. I keep acting out and apologizing. I know I’m…a lot.”
Sigh, I never dislike books. Cyrus was just hard to like and I mean this respectfully. Both characters grew up with tragic back stories, and I applaud them both because life sucks. The story had potential and it was interesting, it just wasn’t for me.
